One
of the important tasks of Distance Education Council (DEC) is to create
an Information base of all the Open and Distance Learning Institutes of
the country. Distance Education Council has undertaken an exercise of
updating the Information base of OUs/DEI’s which was last published
by DEC in 2007 containing data pertaining to 2004-2005.
The major objective behind this endeavor is to build a repository for
researchers, students and academics. This will also find out the gaps
in Gross Enrollment Ratio, the kinds of programmes the ODL institutes
should start which would serve their region and project the demands for
Higher Education,Vocational education for the XII year Plan. The Ministry
of Human Resource Development has also asked Distance Education Council
(DEC) to supply these data. Furthermore this will also enable DEC in funding
and developing proposal of the ODL Institutes for the XII Plan.
While acting as a national repository for planners and policy makers,
this information base, which will be soon available in Printed as well
as user friendly web format, is also envisaged as a medium for showcasing
significant contributions made by Distance Education Institutes towards
skill development, bringing inclusive growth in higher education, fostering
innovation etc.
In this context, DEC has solicited quantitative information from all the
Open and Distance Learning Institutes of India.
Further, to supplement above quantitative information and to transform
the repository into a holistic one also highlighting qualitative aspects
of the Institute, DEC has also requested a brief of 2-3 page foreword
from the Hon’ble Vice Chancellors/ Head of the Institute.
It
is expected that this compilation will go in a long way for effective
management of information in DEC and also fulfill one of the responsibilities
of DEC i.e. dissemination of information.
